Considered by many as a pirate, or even a brigand seeking only wealth and plunder of all kinds, Khayreddine Barbarossa was in reality a true hero, mujāhid and conqueror, whose story is little known to most people.

A bulwark against the Spanish Empire and the latter's desire for expansion in Africa, it managed to bring together entire Muslim countries under the Ottoman banner, helping to make the Ottoman fleet the most powerful in the world for nearly three centuries.

Khayreddīne's role did not stop there: he continued, throughout his life, to help the Moriscos of al-Andalus, tortured and exterminated under the Spanish Inquisition. He will thus save more than seventy thousand of them from certain death, transporting them to the coasts of the Maghreb. He will even consider the reconquest of the lands of al-Andalus, and will propose an expedition to America newly discovered by the Europeans, in order to dislodge the latter.
